BURLINGAME — CTA President E. Toby Boyd released the following statement in response to Governor Gavin Newsom choosing California Secretary of State Alex Padilla to be California’s next United States senator:

“We congratulate Governor Gavin Newsom’s choice for California’s next United States senator, Secretary of State Alex Padilla. Secretary of State Padilla will be the first Latino to hold this office, showing millions of California students that with hard work and determination anything is possible. His leadership is exactly what our state and country need in this unprecedented moment in history. Secretary of State Padilla has a proven track record as a champion for all communities. Under his leadership, over 22 million Californians are registered to vote — the highest number in decades. By expanding access to the ballot box, Secretary of State Padilla created a pathway for every voice across our state to be rightfully heard and counted. Over two terms as a state senator, he also passed landmark legislation to bridge the digital divide and expand college access to support English learners and protect student athletes. On behalf of the 310,000-member California Teachers Association, we look forward to working with him to fight for students, educators, working families, and our communities.”
