Recommendations for Statewide Constitutional Offices, Assembly, and Senate were passed by the 800 delegates of CTA’s State Council of Education
(Sacramento): The 800 democratically elected representatives of the California Teachers Association State Council of Education voted this weekend to recommend candidates in California’s upcoming statewide elections.
At the top of the list, is CTA’s recommendation of Richard Barrera for State Superintendent of Public Instruction. As President of the San Diego Unified School Board, Barrera’s support was instrumental in the San Diego Education Association achieving lower class sizes, more opportunities for bilingual instruction, and expanded science and career pathways in San Diego and beyond.
“Barrera’s commitment to working families and public education is clear in his decades of experience,” said CTA President David B. Goldberg. “With Barrera’s partnership, educators increased their pay by over 40% and protected affordable, fully paid family benefits. His leadership proves that when you partner with educators, students win.”
Recommendations for other critical statewide races include:
- California Lieutenant Governor: Josh Fryday (D)
- California Secretary of State: Shirley Weber (D)
- California Attorney General: Rob Bonta (D)
- California State Controller: Malia Cohen (D)
- California State Treasurer: Eleni Kounalakis (D)
- California State Insurance Commissioner: Jane Kim (D)
- California State Board of Equalization, 2nd District Sally Lieber (D)
- California State Board of Equalization, 3rd District Mike Gipson (D)
The union plans to revisit the conversation of the 4th district Board of Equalization recommendation at the spring State Council of Education convening. For a full list of CTA candidate recommendations including those in the California State Assembly and Senate, please visit this link.
