Event Description
Ready to build power and strengthen your union? Join educators from across the state at the 2027 CTA Organizing Academy, January 15–17 in Las Vegas, for an intensive, team-based Power Structure Analysis (PSA) training.
Guided by CTA’s organizational North Star—a super majority of local chapters with organizing structures at every site, running effective, high-participation campaigns in every community in California—this year’s Academy will focus on helping local teams understand how power operates in their communities. Through facilitated mapping and analysis, teams will identify key decision-makers, relationships, institutions, potential allies, and opportunities to build the power needed to run effective campaigns and win!
Because effectively understanding, engaging, and shifting power requires collective knowledge and relationships, participating chapters must bring at least two members for locals with 400 or fewer members and at least three members for locals with 401 or more members. Teams should include leaders and members who collectively understand the local’s organizing and bargaining strategy and bring relationships with school board members, parents, community and faith organizations, labor partners, local elected officials, and other community leaders that have been developed through coalition and/or community schools work.
This is a hands-on working Academy. Each local team will work with a facilitator throughout the weekend to develop a Power Structure Analysis of their own community and identify next steps for strengthening relationships and building power when they return home.
To make the most of the Academy, teams will be asked to complete research and pre-work as a group before arriving and come prepared to draw on their collective knowledge of their local and community. Additional instructions and research tools will be provided in advance and will require approximately 2.5 hours of advanced work.
If you have any questions, please email the conference staff at CTAOrganizingAcademy@CTA.org.
