Hospitality workers take care of us when we need to be somewhere other than home. Now’s an opportunity to show our appreciation and support them at a time when all of us need to stay home.

The COVID-19 pandemic is having a devastating impact on workers in the hospitality industry. Event and travel cancellations have caused unprecedented layoffs at hotels, restaurants, university cafeterias and airports. Already, as much as 95 percent of hospitality workers are out of work, with no paychecks coming in to support them. With many already living month-to-month before the pandemic, this crisis is having a catastrophic impact on these workers—the overwhelming majority of whom are women and people of color—and their families.

The federal government has already approved some economic relief for the owners of hotels and restaurants, but hotel and restaurant workers are being left out in the cold. Now more than ever, we need to hold our communities together. UNITE HERE, the union that represents more than 300,000 hospitality workers nationwide, is raising funds to help support these people and their families.

Donations can be made to the main fund to support UNITE HERE members across the country or to regional funds (listed below) to support workers in specific communities. These donations will help struggling hospitality workers:

  • Maintain family health insurance coverage during layoffs or reduced hours.
  • Pay for food, rent and utilities.
  • Replace wages lost due to reduced hours and tips.
  • Retrain for new jobs during the business downturn.
