Absent an agreement today that provides the resources and respect to attract and retain the educators their students deserve, Covina Unified Education Association (CUEA) members will be on strike tomorrow morning.

Negotiations are ongoing to reach a deal to avert a strike and the CUEA Bargaining Team stands ready to negotiate all day and night if necessary. Today marks the 16th bargaining session CUEA has had with Covina-Valley Unified School District (C-VUSD) management, who have refused to budge from their divisive proposals that treat workers inequitably and cut healthcare benefits.

For more than a year, CUEA has been trying to get C-VUSD to resolve three major issues in negotiations: salary, health and welfare benefits, and changes to special education teacher responsibilities. During a rally early this morning that attracted 300 supporters to the district office prior to bargaining, CUEA President Adam Hampton was cautiously optimistic about reaching a deal that will keep educators in classrooms tomorrow.

“We have great hope in our heart as we enter the building and you should too,” he told the assembled crowd. “If that doesn’t happen, you know what to do.”

Earlier this month, CUEA members voted overwhelmingly (96%) to strike if necessary. A report issued last week by a neutral state-appointed fact-finder recommended a settlement framework that rejects the district’s proposal to cut health benefits.
