Hundreds of Covina Unified Education Association members, parents, students and community supporters rallied on Nov. 7 against unnecessary and unfair health care cuts, and for more Special Education supports and fair compensation. The rally coincided with a fact-finding hearing, one of the final steps in negotiations before a potential strike.

The previous week, CUEA members overwhelmingly authorized a strike if necessary, with 95 percent of the bargaining unit voting and 96 percent of those voting approving a walkout.

Despite rainy weather, spirits were high as participants marched and chanted in front of Covina Valley Unified School District headquarters. They were joined by supportive CTA members and leaders from other local CTA chapters, as well as by the CTA officers and other CTA Board members.

“One thing is for sure. If you stand together, you cannot be broken.” – CTA President E. Toby Boyd

“Take a look at the community that has come out to support us,” CUEA President Adam Hampton said as he addressed the crowd and praised the union solidarity on display. “Our bargaining team’s power comes from the strength of this unity here!”

CTA President E. Toby Boyd offered solid support from CTA and members throughout the state and urged members to stay united. “One thing is for sure,” he told the crowd, “If you stand together, you cannot be broken.”

CUEA members remain hopeful their show of solidarity and their strong parent and community support will move the school district to avert a strike, make things right and reach a fair settlement.
