Statement From CTA President E. Toby Boyd on U.S. Senator Kamala Harris as Vice President Pick

Harris is a champion for all students, educators and workers

BURLINGAME — CTA President E. Toby Boyd released the following statement in response to Joe Biden choosing U.S. Senator Kamala Harris as his running mate to the White House:

“We could not be prouder of having U.S. Senator Kamala Harris, who is a product of California public schools, as Joe Biden’s vice president pick. This is a historic day for our country, and it couldn’t come at a more important time. As the first Black woman and Asian American woman on a major party ticket, the selection of Harris sends a much-needed message of unity to our country. Harris’ proven track record of being a champion for all students, educators and workers is reassuring in a time of unprecedented unemployment rates and social unrest. She supports and understands the importance of early childhood education and the role it plays in student success, and as California’s attorney general led programs to support students who were at risk of dropping out. She stood alongside educators on picket lines, who were striking for better wages and dignity on the job; she championed the national Red for Ed movement; she protected workers’ rights in the Friedrichs v. CTA case; and she was instrumental in the Homeowner Bill of Rights during the mortgage crisis. Senator Harris is the change-maker we need to support the next commander in chief and get our country on the right track again.”
