Educators Thank and Salute Speaker Pelosi as She Steps Down from Party Leadership

BURLINGAME — CTA President E. Toby Boyd issued this statement following House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s announcement today that she is stepping aside from her role as Speaker and leader of the Democratic Caucus in the U.S. House of Representatives, while remaining in Congress to represent California’s 12th Congressional District:

“We thank and salute Speaker Pelosi for her historic leadership and advocacy. She was the first woman Speaker of the House and the first woman of either party to lead her party in Congress. As she pointed out today, when she first came to Congress in 1987, there were twelve Democratic women. Now there are more than 90.

“Speaker Pelosi has been a champion of educational opportunity for all students, for keeping students safe from gun violence, for workers’ rights, for affordable health care, and for countless other issues that have made the lives of all Americans better. We look forward to her continued leadership and tenacity as she represents the San Francisco congressional district she has served for 35 years.”
