CTA President Statement on Supreme Court Decision Reversing Roe v. Wade (on Dobb v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization)

SCOTUS ruling exacerbates gender, racial and economic inequities

SACRAMENTO – California Teachers Association President E. Toby Boyd issued the following statement:

“CTA believes reproductive freedom and access to basic healthcare are fundamental human rights. Sadly, the Supreme Court decreed today, that women do not control their own bodies by overturning Roe v. Wade and handing that power to state lawmakers instead. We mourn the loss of women’s constitutional rights and stand in unity with the educators, students and families we serve. The decision will further exacerbate gender, racial and economic inequities that have haunted our communities for centuries. Freedom to make basic healthcare choices will be afforded to only those who can afford to travel across state lines.

“The Supreme Court decision fails to protect our freedoms and instead politicizes the nation’s highest court and is antithetical to the very foundation on which the Supreme Court was established. Together, we must speak out to protect our democracy, as well as the safety and well-being of students and educators by electing leaders who share our commitment to public education and freedom.”
