Educators Vow to Continue Fight to End Systemic and Racial Injustice that Terrorizes Our Communities of Color

BURLINGAME – CTA President E. Toby Boyd released the following statement celebrating the U.S. Supreme Court decision Thursday to uphold the protections of 700,000 DACA recipients, many of whom include educators and students—CTA members:

“We celebrate the Supreme Court’s decision overruling President Donald Trump’s attempt to strip the legal protections for our Dreamers who were brought to this country at a young age by their parents who wanted desperately to give them a better life. Today, these very individuals are teachers, healthcare workers, and students, and play an essential role in our communities. This ruling fuels our energy in the fight against systemic and racial injustice that terrorizes our communities of color and threatens their safety and basic human rights. Although this administration is likely to seek another path to strip Dreamers of their legal protections, today’s decision lets our DACA students and colleagues know you are welcome here. You are welcome to pursue your dreams, your education, and your career. This is a fight we will continue until all our students and our fellow Americans feel safe, supported, and valued. We still have much work to do for America to live up to the ideals we were founded on, but the momentum of change is growing and educators will continue to be at the forefront of the fight to end the systematic and racial injustice that has terrorized communities of color for centuries.”

This decision comes following last year’s CTA argument in a legal brief submitted with the Court, which states that the action the Trump administration took to end DACA was unlawful, arbitrary, and capricious, and therefore should be set aside.
