Celebrate Public Education, Great Teaching and Learning: California Day of the Teacher Is May 8

BURLINGAME — “Great Teaching Is Never Forgotten” is the theme for the 2019 Day of the Teacher celebration. Amid the local events statewide to honor and thank educators, the California Teachers Association is asking educators and the public to share memorable lessons learned from their teachers using the hashtags #DayoftheTeacher and #GreatTeaching.

“Great teaching is never forgotten, and our students remind us of that every day. They may not remember individual lessons, but they know we care. And they all have stories of lessons learned from their favorite teachers. There are amazing stories of how California teachers advocate for their schools and communities on behalf of students,” said Eric Heins, president of the 325,000-member California Teachers Association. “And that advocacy happens in and out of the classroom. We each fight for our students in our own way, and when we work together, amazing things happen.”

Some of those lessons learned will be highlighted in TV and radio spots CTA is launching on May 8 as educators share lessons learned from colleagues, from their students, and from participants in the #RedForEd movement. “Educators tell stories of their classroom and why they advocate for their students,” noted Heins. “And they want to shine a light on what’s happening in the classrooms and school buildings across our state. We teach and advocate for every single student, because they deserve a first-rate education that gives them a chance at a better future, and it makes for a stronger California.”

California Day of the Teacher stems from a partnership between CTA and the Association of Mexican American Educators.
