California Educators Support Sacramento City Teachers Strike

BURLINGAME — CTA President E. Toby Boyd, a kindergarten educator, released the following statement in response to educators with the Sacramento City Teachers Association (SCTA) going on strike starting today:

“The California Teachers Association and its 310,000 educators stand behind Sacramento City teachers and their decision to go on strike starting today. Deciding to strike is never a decision that teachers take lightly. But in this case, educators and school staff are standing together to ensure that students have the most basic of their educational needs met – that every student has a teacher. The status quo – 10,000 students a day without a permanent teacher, 3,000 students a day without a substitute teacher, nearly 600 independent study students who have had no instruction at all this year – is simply unacceptable. We know that our underserved students, and our black and brown students, are disproportionately bearing the brunt of this staffing crisis. Sacramento City educators, we stand with you, we support you, and we join you in your resolve to demand that students have the basic support and the strong, stable schools they need.”
