BURLINGAME – As union educators across California mobilize to support their fellow California Teachers Association (CTA) members impacted by the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles County, we are touched by the outpouring of support for our members and their families – including from the Taiwanese American Scholarship Fund (TASF).
TASF has committed to donating $150,000 to CTA’s Disaster Relief Fund, providing $3,000 grants to qualified CTA members who lost their homes in the Eaton Fire.
“This is a tremendous gift that shows our educators the healing power of our solidarity,” CTA President David Goldberg said. “On behalf of CTA, I want to thank the Taiwanese American Scholarship Fund for their generosity and support of our members, their families and our union.”
Created in 2014, TASF supports economically challenged students of Taiwanese descent residing in the U.S. with their pursuit of higher education. The Taiwanese American Scholarship Fund board recognizes that, without teachers, there would be no formal education system to support students. In times of crisis, such as the recent Los Angeles wildfires, teachers play an even more critical role in the recovery of communities. “They are not only educators, but also beacons of hope, resilience and continuity for affected students and families,” TASF Board President Howard Zee said in a statement.
“Without teachers, we cannot discuss rebuilding our schools, restoring normalcy or bringing our local economies back to life,” Zee continued. “Teachers are often among the first to step forward, ensuring that students continue to receive the support they need, even amidst overwhelming adversity. However, they also face immense challenges, including the destruction of their own homes, schools and lives.”
Donate to CTA’s Disaster Relief Fund, as well as to GoFundMe accounts set up for educators who have lost everything, by visiting cta.org/LAwildfires and be a part of the healing and recovery for educators in need.
“Please join TASF and donate today,” Goldberg said. “Let’s show our educators that we’re here for them, every step of the way.”
