Build an Equity Team
What is an Equity Team?
Equity Teams are groups of educators and leaders within a local CTA chapter or Service Center Council who come together to advance racial and social justice in their schools, unions, and communities. The Equity Team is composed of the Human Rights Advocacy Coordinator, the LGBTQ+ Advocacy Coordinator, and the Women’s Advocacy Coordinator. They serve as:
Spaces for Awareness: Building shared understanding of how race, class, gender, ability, and other identities impact students and educators
Hubs for Capacity Building: Strengthening members’ skills to lead difficult conversations, challenge inequities, and organize for systemic change.
Engines for Action: Developing and carrying out plans—at the site, district, or regional level—that create more just schools and workplaces where all students and educators thrive.
Equity Teams are the organizing “home base” for members who want to move their union from awareness to action—creating schools our students deserve and unions that share our values.
Equity Teams thrive when members bring their lived experiences, courage, and commitment to racial and social justice. Whether you’re stepping into an existing space or helping to create one, your voice and leadership are essential to moving our union forward.
SCC Equity Teams are regional “power hubs” — helping locals move from isolated efforts to coordinated campaigns that shift conditions for educators, students, and communities across California.
How do I join or form an Equity Team?
Local Level:
On the local level, you can form and/or join an Equity Team by:
Connecting with your local chapter leadership. Many chapters already have Equity Teams. Reach out to your chapter president, executive board, Equity team chair and/or one of your team’s advocacy coordinators- (Human Rights Advocacy Coordinator, the LGBTQ+ Advocacy Coordinator, and the Women’s Advocacy Coordinator) to learn how to get involved.
Joining an existing team. If your local chapter already has an Equity Team, contact your Chapter President or PCS to learn more about it.
Starting a new team where one does not yet exist. Work with your chapter leadership, colleagues, and CTA primary contact staff to launch a team tailored to your local needs and get the resources, tools, and support to help you build from the ground up.
Collaborating with your Service Center Council. If your chapter is small or still developing, you can participate in regional Equity Team work through your Service Center Council, joining with members from other locals.
Completing the Chapter Advocacy Coordinators Appointment Form. Once your local Equity Team has designated advocacy coordinators, your chapter should complete this form to make the team official. This ensures your team receives CTA communications, statewide conference discounts, and resource updates.
Service Center Council (SCC) Level:
On the Service Center Council (SCC) level, CTA Service Center Council (SCC) Equity Teams are regional networks that bring together equity leaders and members from multiple local chapters. They expand the work of local Equity Teams by:
Creating regional community. SCC Equity Teams connect educators across districts to share experiences, build solidarity, and learn from one another.
Building collective capacity. They provide trainings, resources, and strategy sessions to strengthen members’ skills in racial and social justice organizing.
Linking local to statewide. SCC Equity Teams serve as a bridge between local chapter efforts and CTA’s statewide racial and social justice priorities, ensuring alignment and mutual support.
Amplifying impact. By coordinating across locals, SCC Equity Teams take on broader equity challenges and opportunities that affect entire regions, not just single districts.
Completing the SCC Equity and REAC Team Appointment Form. Each SCC should designate Equity Team advocacy coordinators and SCC Chairs will submit this form to make the team official. This ensures the SCC Equity Team is connected to CTA communications, conference discounts, and statewide equity and REAC resource updates.
Local Equity Team Meetings
Our Equity Team Meetings are created especially for CTA local chapter equity teams and/or social justice committees to provide members with an opportunity to meet equity teams across the state, develop strategies on how to strengthen their team, and share ideas about racial and social justice programming.
There will be opportunities for regional breakout sessions and networking.
All members from Equity Teams and Social Justice Committees are encouraged to attend. Members who are interested in developing an Equity Team in their local are also encouraged to attend.
