WHEREAS, Teach For America claims to fight to end educational inequality and yet ends up exacerbating one of the greatest inequalities in education by placing inexperienced teachers into low income communities where quality and stable teachers are much needed; and
WHEREAS, TFA is not progressive. The kind of limited data-driven pedagogy, the fast-track preparation, the union-busting, the forced exploitation of your labor, the deep-pocketed affiliation with corporate education reform are all very antiprogressive ideas; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That Student CTA believes that TFA’s model is increasing inequality in education which is against Student CTA’s social justice values.
Degrees Not Debt
WHEREAS, the rise in student tuition is unsustainable, student tuition has risen 1100 percent since 1978. And that is also the result of a decrease in state funding, 40 percent in that same period less in state funds for public colleges; and
WHEREAS, While the prevalent social narrative paints a picture of tradeoffs and lost dreams due to overwhelming student loan debt, the reality is that college graduates are far and away in better financial position than individuals with only a high school diploma putting them well on their way to achieving their dreams; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, SCTA believes the Degrees Not Debt campaign aims to reduce student debt and make college affordable for all students, regardless of their family income. It’s about educational equity for all, and making sure every student can get the education they need to get a good job, own a home, and eventually send their own children to college.
