This virtual conference is hosted by the California Association of African-American Superintendents & Administrators (CAAASA) and will feature sessions for educators, parents, and others regarding mitigating the impact of COVID-19 on students of color.

This is a pre-conference event for the May 26-28, 2021 “Achieving an Equity Driven Education” conference.

Sessions and Speakers

Session 1

Dr. Kimani Norrington-Sands, Author – Butterfly Landing

COVID-19 is creating a mental health crisis. students are experiencing isolation, depression, anxiety and stress. In addition to these symptoms, it is reported that an alarming number of African American students are contemplating suicide.

This session will include recommendation from experts.

Session 2

Kenneth Wesson, Educational Consultant – Neuroscience

Addressing social emotional learning is needed throughout California schools.

This session will include Creating A Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Virtual Clinic. This unique session will address the need for social emotional learning to support classroom and at-home learning environments with recommendation from experts.

Session 3

Sherman Garnett, Pupil Services – Academy Director & Donald English, Director – Children Diverse Success

This interactive workshop will provide parents with the information they need to know when contacting school officials with questions regarding attendance, grading, discipline policies and health issues.
