The Trump/Musk administration is threatening to hold hostage $3.43 billion in federal funding for California’s special education services and meals for children.

That could be the outcome to the U.S. Dept. of Education’s investigation into the California Department of Education for enforcing the SAFETY Act, the California law signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom in July that ensures our laws are followed to protect the safety of all students and educators who follow the law.

CTA President David Goldberg quickly issued a response to threatening funding for students.

“We respect our justice system and follow laws in California. We wish we could say the same for the Trump/Musk administration. In California, we also provide safe and supportive learning environments for all students and educators were proud to support the SAFETY Act to protect all students’ rights to a safe and supportive learning environment. Our union fights every day to secure resources for our students and this administration threatening to steal money from students to pad the pockets of billionaires is another step in the wrong direction for our country. The Trump/Musk Administration is attacking our most vulnerable students who rely on these funds for food and special education services, and we will fight for them and their future here in California.”

Our union believes that teachers are the most important and trusted resource for our children as they learn and grow while at school, and that we should empower teachers to create a safe learning environment where students feel accepted, nurtured, and encouraged to pursue their dreams.
