Leading the way to improve learning and teaching conditions

Mel House, a credentialed physical education teacher in the Los Angeles Unified School District, is serving a term on the CTA Board that expires in June of 2024.

As the Governing Board Member for District J, House has statewide responsibilities on the CTA Board, representing the numerous California educators serving on the National Education Association (NEA) Board. House represents the Los Angeles area on the NEA Board as well. House has 25 years of overall teaching experience and is currently an elementary physical education educator in the Los Angeles Unified School District’s Physical Education Teacher Itinerant Program.

“I love working with kids, and P.E. was always my favorite subject. Teaching P.E. is a perfect match.”

House’s CTA activism includes serving on the Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Issues Advisory Committee and chairing the Equity and Human Rights Conference, along with serving on the LGBT+ Conference planning committee. They were also a CTA State Council delegate for six years and a delegate to the NEA Representative Assembly for eight years (House prefers the use of nonbinary gender pronouns).

They served their local union, United Teachers Los Angeles, in many capacities, including as a site rep chair, chair of the UTLA inner city
committee, and as an area director for five years. In 2015, they were awarded the NEA Foundation Award for Teaching Excellence, and was an NEA Foundation Global Education Fellow. House was an Education Consortium of Central Los Angeles honoree in 2009.

House holds a bachelor’s in exercise science/physical education from Michigan State University and had other teaching experience in Glendale and in Michigan.

House lives in Northridge.
