Leading the Way to Improve Learning and Teaching Conditions

Mara Harvey was raised in a bed and breakfast in Grass Valley, California, the same part of the state she now represents, spending her formative years meeting people from all over the world.

She began her career in education in 2002 as a high school social science teacher and has been part of the Natomas Unified School District since 2005. In 2016, she earned her administrative credential and master’s degree in School Leadership, but found her true calling in union work while negotiating.

Her passion for advocacy led her to union leadership, first as lead of the bargaining team, then as union president of Natomas Teachers Assn.

Deeply committed to educational equity, Harvey has been a driving force in the community schools movement, bargaining some of the early language,  and worked with the California Department of Education to shape the Seal of Civic Engagement.

Through her leadership, she continues to champion student voice, educator empowerment, and the role of public schools in strengthening democracy.
