Leading the way to improve learning and teaching conditions

A kindergarten educator and public schools advocate, California Teachers Association President E. Toby Boyd leads the 310,000-strong union of educators statewide. President Boyd, serving his second term as president, is proudly leading the way to improve teaching and learning conditions with a strong commitment to racial and social justice while providing a voice for all educators.

His background includes a host of leadership and advocacy roles during a 25-year teaching career in the Elk Grove Unified School District, two terms as CTA District E Governing Board member and long-standing delegate for the National Education Association Representative Assembly.

President Boyd was instrumental to ensuring the safety of California’s educators, students and their families surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, from pivoting to and back from virtual instruction, providing meals and access to technology, and securing vaccines for educators, to Supplemental leave for employees to recover or care for their families.

He is a graduate of California State University-Sacramento, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in liberal studies with an emphasis in bilingual/cross-cultural studies, and then earned his teaching credential from the Multi-Cultural/Multi-Lingual Center at the university.
