Leading the way to improve learning and teaching conditions
An educator for more than 25 years, CTA Vice President David B. Goldberg has spent most of his career as a bilingual teacher at Murchison Elementary in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). In addition to English, he is fluent in both Spanish and sign language.
Goldberg has a long history of union activism. In addition to serving as CTA secretary-treasurer for four years and two terms on the CTA Board of Directors, he previously served as treasurer of United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA). Goldberg comes from a long line of Los Angeles educator union leaders—he was active in the UTLA strike of 2019 just as his mother “walked the line in 1989” as a UTLA strike captain and his grandmother did during the L.A. teachers strike in the 1970s.
Goldberg was a leader in CTA’s Strategic Planning Workgroup, helping to set the union’s vision to build power and advocate for the strong public schools all students deserve. He is the liaison to the Board of Directors on CTA’s racial justice work, as well as the lead on Community Schools at a time when the state is making record investments in their transformative power.
He also co-led CTA’s historic Proposition 15 effort in 2020, working with the largest coalition ever assembled in the attempt to reform corporate property tax laws and fully fund California’s public schools and local services.
Goldberg sees advocacy for a strong public education system as part of a larger struggle for social justice, with CTA continuing to have a leading role in that movement. Goldberg earned a bachelor’s degree in community studies from the University of California Santa Cruz, and after a brief career as a professional basketball player overseas, earned his teaching credential through the intern program in LAUSD.
He is a lifelong resident of the Echo Park neighborhood in Los Angeles, where he lives with his wife, Karla Alvarado-Goldberg (a high school psychiatric social worker in LAUSD) and their three children.
