January 19, 2021 Update

  • Case Rate Rose Again: California’s statewide COVID-19 new cases per day rose to 105.4 per 100,000 people. Last week it was at 91.7 per 100,000 and at 74.1 per 100,000 earlier this month.
  • Test Positivity Dipped A Bit: The statewide 7-day average test positivity rate dipped to 15.2%. It was 17.6% in last week’s report and 15% earlier this month. For comparison, it was 3.3% three months ago in the October 20 CDPH Report. The World Health Organization recommends maintaining test positivity at 5% or lower.  The Purple Tier threshold indicating widespread risk is 8%.
  • Health Inequity Persists: California’s most vulnerable and hardest hit communities continue to face serious health inequities with very high double-digit test positivity rates reaching as high as 27.7% per the state’s Health Equity Metric.
  • Statewide ICU Capacity:  0.0% available (0.0% reported last week, too.)
