AB 1217 by Assembly Member Raul Bocanegra & Senator Anthony Portantino

CTA-opposed AB 1217  is NOT going forward after much great lobbying and ground work, phone calls, emails, action on social media and coalition work. AB 1217 would create a private STEM school with public funds, provides NO AUTHORITY TO SHUT DOWN THE SCHOOL, even if the school breaks the law by charging money or weeding out certain children or families, COMPROMISES LOCAL CONTROL which we've been working so hard on to make sure the students in our community get the education they need, and would set a DESTRUCTIVE PRECEDENT FOR PUBLIC EDUCATION.

SB 328 by Senator Anthony Portantino
CTA-opposed SB 328 requires the school day for middle schools and high schools to begin no later than 8:30 a.m. School start times should be decided at the local level and include community input. Local leaders, with this input, are best prepared to make these decisions that will best meet the needs of the students. SB 328 did not get the votes it needed to clear the Assembly.

AB 1220 by Assembly Member Shirley Weber
CTA-opposed AB 1220 extends the probationary periods for educators from two years to three years, does not provide due process, and does not include support in years one or two of the probationary period, but only in year three. It also calls for setting up yet another unproven process in school districts, an Individualized Improvement Plan (IIP) for educators. Instead, we should build on what has been working in many districts and already exists in state law, and that is Peer Assistance and Review (PAR). 

AB 1164 by Assembly Member Tony Thurmond
CTA-supported AB 1164 extends the probationary period to three years while ensuring the employer provides written notice to the employee with specific reasons on what needs improvement in the third year; employer refers employee to Peer Assistance and Review (PAR) Program that has been collectively bargained, for purpose of coaching and professional development; and that the credentialed employee has participated in beginning teacher support and assessment program during first two years (if employee does not have clear credential). There are also provisions of the bill that include adding due process protections to the third year while allowing the Union and employer to bargain an alternative process.
