CTA Gains Approval of Bill to Bar For-profit On-line Charter School Companies
(Center) Stacey Preach, a former teacher at the California Virtual Academy and a parent, and other educators testify in support of CTA-backed AB 1084 (Bonilla).
The bill would restrict the ability of for-profit companies to run on-line charter schools. Witnesses testified that one charter “holding company” in Virginia is reporting millions in profits at the expense of the public charter school students the school is pledged to educate.
The measure was approved by the Senate Education Committee Wednesday morning.
The bill ensures that on-line charter schools are non-profit entities that provide instructional services with a focus on students’ academic achievement, and not profit.
