Leading the way to improve learning and teaching conditions
Gayle Bilek, an inspirational music teacher in Templeton Unified School District in San Luis Obispo County, is serving her third term on the CTA Board, which expires on June 25, 2021.
An educator for 36 years, Bilek represents CTA members in the counties of Ventura, Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Monterey, Santa Cruz, San Benito, and in the southern tip of Santa Clara County.
Her long record of union activism includes serving as president of the Templeton Teachers Association and a nine-year stint on the CTA State Council of Education Political Involvement Committee, which she also chaired for three years. She served as a State Council delegate for nine years and was the CTA member liaison to the state Fair Political Practices Commission. She also served on the CTA ABC Committee for four years.
For 25 years she has inspired her students at Templeton Middle School to love and appreciate music, some of whom auditioned and performed on the Disneyland stage in Anaheim. She was named Templeton Unified Teacher of the Year in 1998. She also taught for 15 years in the Salinas Elementary School District.
Bilek, who is the first and only person in her family with a college degree, earned her bachelor’s degree and teaching credential from San Diego State University. Her husband, Bob, is retired. They have two grown children, Steven and Jennifer.
Bilek lives in Paso Robles.
