California Wildfires 2018

Hands, with text: California Wildfires. Working Together in Times of Need

Wildfires have caused massive devastation and ravaged communities throughout California. As news floods in about these tragedies, stories of heroism, kindness and compassion give us hope. It always becomes clear: in times of tragedy and crisis, look to your union sisters and brothers to lend a helping hand.

See below for information about resources, how you can help those in need, and news about educators throughout California stepping up to save lives and rebuild their communities.

Impacted by California wildfires? Your Union is here to help.

Have you been affected by the Camp Fire, Woolsey Fire or another California wildfire? CTA’s Disaster Relief Fund provides financial assistance grants for CTA members who have suffered significant losses from fires and other disasters.

Apply for help: download and fill out CTA's Disaster Relief Grant Form.

Need assistance filling out the form? We're here to help:

  • For members impacted by wildfires in Butte County: Call CTA's Regional Resource Center in Chico at (530) 345-9743. You can also visit the RRC (address: 1430 East Avenue, #1, Chico, 95926). Local leaders and staff will be there to help you fill out the Disaster Relief Grant forms and find temporary housing if needed.
  • For members in the Santa Monica-Malibu area: The Santa Monica-Malibu Classroom Teachers Association is fundraising for members who have suffered severe losses from the Woolsey Fire to cover immediate, short-term financial assistance. The chapter has a list of teachers affected by this fire, but if you have not been contacted by the district, you can email them here.
  • For members in the Oxnard and Simi/Las Virgenes areas please contact the CTA Oxnard Regional Resource Center at (805) 485-1706.
Information on the resources available to residents impacted by the fires can be found at http://wildfirerecovery.org/

Help our sisters and brothers in need.

In the immediate aftermath of a wildfire, the best form of aid is cash assistance to communities affected by the fires. It's tough to know exactly what items should be donated and where to send them. If you can, donate to the funds below so local folks on the ground can purchase the items they need. Below are active funds that are good to donate to:

You can also donate directly to CTA's Disaster Relief Fund. Sign up for automatic payroll deduction or send a check made out to:

Information for how to help animals and family pets affected by the Camp Fire available here.
