Educators met with assembly members and staff this week to advocate a YES on AB 1478, which will ensure charter school governance is transparent and that monitoring and oversight of charter schools are conducted to protect public education and be in the best interest of our children. The bill was passed out of Assembly Education Committee on a party line 5-2 vote.

Along with AB 1478, CTA is co-sponsoring two others bills that will ensure transparency and accountability for California’s charter schools as well as equal access for all students. Contact your legislators and urge them to support AB 1360 and SB 808.

AB 699 prohibits discrimination and provides protections based on a student’s immigration status or religious beliefs. The bill passed 5-1, with bi-partisan support.

CTA member Betsy Jara, a speech and language pathologist from Corona Norco shared her experience of ICE circling their school sites in January and February, resulting in dismal student attendance. She shared the fear and anxiety that was conveyed from parents to educators.
