Supporting Counseling
CTA is supporting a bill that would expand counseling and student support services.
SB 1731, by Sen. Jackie Speier (D-San Francisco), has cleared the Senate and is awaiting action in the Assembly Education Committee, with a vote slated for June 28. The Speier measure would provide $36.4 million to fund the placement of one credentialed counselor in each middle school and high school in the Deciles 1-3 categories on the state's Academic Performance Index (API).
CTA has also backed two other counseling support measures this legislative session as part of its ongoing efforts to bolster individual attention for all students. Both measures have failed to clear their house of origin, the Assembly, and are not expected to move any further this session.
AB 2003, by Assembly Member Leland Yee (D-San Francisco), would have created the Comprehensive Pupil Learning Support System, a pilot program, to help students, their families, and the community work together to ensure student success.
AB 2785 by, Assembly Member Loni Hancock (D-El Cerrito), would have established the Eighth Grade Counseling Program to help students create a curriculum plan for their 9th-12th grade years. The measure would have provided funding to enable counselors to provide their valuable assistance to students in formulating plans for their success in college or in the world of work.
CTA Members:
Urge members of Assembly Education to vote for SB 1731 (Speier) when it comes before them on June 28.
