Gov. Davis Approves Key CTA Retirement Legislation

CTA has won another major legislative victory for educators throughout the state with Gov. Gray Davis' signing of a key retirement measure on September 5.

The CTA measure, AB 1207 by Assembly Member Ellen Corbett (D-San Leandro), will allow K-12, County Office of Education, and community college districts to offer senior teachers up to two years of additional service and age credit with the State Teachers' Retirement System. That additional credit could provide teachers with thousands of additional dollars during their retirement years.

"We are extremely pleased that Gov. Davis signed AB 1207," said CTA President Barbara E. Kerr. "This is an important measure that will reward senior teachers for long years of dedicated service, help protect the jobs of newer teachers, and provide an incentive for highly qualified young people to enter the teaching profession."

Under terms of AB 1207, local chapters can bargain the new retirement benefit. Persons taking advantage of the program would be limited on their options to returning to teaching after retirement.

None of the incentive time allowed by the Corbett bill counts toward retirement enhancements and bonuses, including longevity, career, or highest year compensation.
