For CC Part-time Instructors
Gov. Gray Davis has signed a CTA sponsored measure aimed at allowing part-time faculty to participate in out-of-classroom assignments without reducing the amount of teaching they can do.
The signature came after the Assembly - like the Senate - overwhelmingly approved CTA-sponsored SB 955, by Senate President Pro Tempore John Burton (D-San Francisco).
SB 955 specifically allows part-time community college faculty to accept ancillary assignments without that activity being calculated as part of their instructional hours.
The proposal will protect part-time faculty from being forced to reduce the number of classes they teach in order not to exceed current work-time limits. The ancillary activities include such things as grant writing or faculty committee work.
The measure will benefit community colleges by allowing part-time faculty to bring their expertise to these out-of-classroom assignments without bumping up against part-time teaching load caps.
Students will benefit because part-time faculty will be able to teach classes, as well as provide additional support as faculty advisors.
