CTA President Tells Lawmakers
CTA President Wayne Johnson told members of the Senate Transportation Committee that a measure supported by teachers will help parents get their children to school and to needed health care.
Testifying on April 1, the Association president urged lawmakers to approve SB 60, a measure by Sen. Gil Cedillo (D-Los Angeles) that would prohibit the Department of Motor Vehicles from withholding a driver's license from someone based upon their immigration status.
"A quick read of SB 60 might not tell you why the bill is both an education and a civil rights issue. Let me make those connections quickly," CTA President Johnson told lawmakers.
By making it difficult for parents to get driver's licenses, "current law is making it virtually impossible for some parents to attend parent conferences and other school events that support their children's education," he said.
CTA was joined in its support for the measure by a coalition of education and civil rights groups.
The measure gained the committee's approval and now heads to Senate Appropriations for further action.
