The CTA/NEA-Retired Board of Directors has voted unanimously to endorse the candidacy of Phil Angelides for governor. The decision is a logical extension of last fall's efforts to defeat Gov. Schwarzenegger's anti-public education/teacher initiatives.
"We should not forget that the governor reneged on his promise and still owes $3 billion to the schools," says Arlene Pavey, the newly re-elected president of CTA/NEA-Retired. "We should also remember that the governor has appealed the court's ruling to pay the $500 million he owes our retirement system."
"When the future of public education is at stake, we cannot remain silent," she adds. "We have an obligation to protect public education. We made a difference in November; we can do so again!"
Also re-elected to office in CTA/NEA-Retired are Vice President Ed Foglia from Granite Bay and Secretary-Treasurer Beverly Carlson from Marysville.
Regional representatives who will serve on CTA's State Council of Education include Vince Cortese from Mountain View (Region 1), E. Anne Handel from Anderson (Region 2), Dorothy Moser from Hollywood (Region 3) and Alen Ritchie from Redlands (Region 4).
Membership in the retired affiliate of CTA gives retired educators a way to continue their activism when they have the time to do so, both at the state and national levels.
