Following are some of the conference opportunities available to CTA members over the next few months.
Secondary Literacy Summit
CTA is one of several sponsors for the 2007 Secondary Literacy Summit VII: Maximizing Student Learning. The conference, to be held March 25-27 in Garden Grove, is designed as an opportunity for middle and high school teachers, administrators and school teams to learn how California schools address national and state mandates for student literacy. Keynote presenters and workshops will focus on reading, academic vocabulary, comprehension and writing. Instructional strategies will address struggling students, English learners and special-needs students. School presentations will feature secondary school teams that are successfully improving student literacy. For information, contact CTA Instruction and Professional Development at (650) 552-5496.

The program will feature a presentation on the Educational Change Workgroup recommendations on adequacy and equity in school funding, teacher compensation, teacher development, assistance to schools, and assessment and testing. Breakout sessions on each topic will give participants an opportunity to express what their chapters need in the implementation of the recommendations. Highlights of the conference include workshops on such topics as health care, retirement issues, education reform and organizing for strength. Exhibits will showcase CTA departments and programs. Good Teaching Conferences
The two CTA Good Teaching Conferences — the Northern California conference Jan. 19-21 in Burlingame and the Southern California conference March 9-11 in Irvine — are designed to support excellent teaching and learning practices for classroom teachers. Offering a variety of diverse workshops in curriculum content areas for K-12 teachers, the conferences provide opportunities for professional development and offer time to network and share ideas with colleagues and experts in the field. The conferences also offer Friday pre-conference sessions that promote skill building and in-depth knowledge for classroom teachers. Equity and Human Rights Conference
The 2007 Equity and Human Rights Conference, scheduled for March 2-4 in San Jose, focuses on the effort to ensure that the dignity and civil rights of all children and youth are protected, and a more democratic and equitable society is secured. The conference combines speakers and workshops to provide CTA members with an increased understanding on the issues of diversity and equity. Some 50 workshops will cover topics of special interest in promoting diversity, reducing racism, celebrating women’s issues, and withstanding attacks on public education.
