Chavez Awards encourage communication of vision

CTA’s César E. Chávez Memorial Education Awards Program provides recognition for students and their teachers who demonstrate an understanding of the vision and guiding principles by which César E. Chávez lived his life.

This year, 18 winners — 13 visual arts projects and five written essays — have been selected to receive prizes of $500 (savings bond or cash) for the student and $500 for the teacher.

Visual arts winners, grades K-2, are: Courtney Marshall, student of Carmen Donez, Fallbrook Elementary Teach­ers Association, Region 4; and Bria Reed, student of Robert D. Ellis, United Teachers of Richmond, Region 1.

Visual arts winners, grades 3-5, are: Pedrito Guzman, student of Therese Brady, Santa Maria Elementary Education Association, Region 3; Mario Morillon, student of Rhonda Dutton, Porterville Educators Association, Region 2; Christy Nguyen, student of Leslie C. Antosy-Flores, Ocean View Teachers Association, Region 4; and Kaylee Kennedy and Jasmine Arballo, students of Mary Anna Maloney, Santa Rosa Teachers Association, Region 1.

Visual arts winners, grades 6-8, are: Rogelio Aguayo, student of Micki Dias, Oakdale Teachers Association, Region 2; Monserrat Coria, student of Mary Bracken, Guerneville Teachers Association, Region 1; and Natalie Beall, student of Ellen K. Bertelsen, Cajon Valley Education Association, Region 4.

Visual arts winners, grades 9-12, are: Rocio Juarez, student of Margarita Milnes, Baldwin Park Education Association, Region 3; Karla Gomez, student of Maria E. Vega, Napa Valley Educators Association, Region 1; Yasmine Mejia, student of Alison Denning, Fontana Teachers Association, Region 4; and Gabriel Gonzalez, student of Sharon Shute Russell, Torrance Teachers Association, Region 3.

Written essay winners, grades K-2, are: Phillip Padilla, student of Diane Doris Kissas, Montebello Teachers Association, Region 3; Carolina Medina, student of Yolanda Pantoja, Porterville Educators Association, Region 2; and Samantha Garcia, student of Stephanie Nobles, Fontana Teachers Association, Region 4.

The written essay winner for grades 6-8 is: Syeda K. Inamdar, student of Bruce Roberts, New Haven Teachers Association, Region 1.

The written essay winner at the community college level is: Mari Vang, student of Michael Barba, Merced College Faculty Association, Region 2.
