ALERT: Renew credentials online

Effective Jan. 1, the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing will be requiring teachers to renew their credentials online.

The requirement affects teachers holding clear, professional and professional clear credentials.

The automated credentialing system [teachercred.ctc.ca.gov] is intended to expedite the processing of credential documents. The Virtual Credential Officer (VCO), as the automated process is called, can usually complete the credential renewal process within 10 business days. Currently, nearly 5,000 credentials are renewed online monthly.

To address teachers’ concerns about access to computers, data security, access to a VISA or MasterCard, and dating issues regarding late renewals, the commission says:

  • Teachers can use computers at their district offices or local libraries.
  • CTC Web servers are protected by firewall and intrusion detection systems.
  • Individuals who do not have a VISA or MasterCard can purchase a VISA or MasterCard gift card from banks, grocery stores and most retailers.
  • The validation of service procedure may be used by employers to cover a lapse in service.

The renewal code and renewal requirements for each credential, certificate and permit are printed on the document.

Teachers who have already submitted an application for the same credential by mail should not use the automated service as fees for duplicate applications are not refundable.

For more information, call CTC Information Services at (888) 921-2682 Monday through Friday 1-4:45 p.m. or e-mail credentials@ctc.ca.gov.
