Alliance takes governor to task

CTA Board member Lynette Henley from Vallejo addresses an alliance rally outside a fundraiser in Sacramento.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has spent more than 165 days out of the state since he was elected to office, according to the Alliance for a Better California. He's been all over the map, raising money from corporate contributors across the country.

While he's out raising funds, "he isn't doing the job he was elected to do. He isn't keeping the promises that he made to the people of California," said CTA Board member Lynette Henley, speaking on behalf of CTA at a rally outside yet another of his fundraising events.

Nearly 1,000 teachers, school employees, firefighters, nurses, police officers and other concerned citizens showed up for the protest at the Sacramento Hyatt April 27.

Rally speakers reminded protesters not to be fooled by empty promises. For example, when the governor ran for office, he promised to fully fund schools, but he still won't pay back the $3.2 billion he owes public education. And he promised he wouldn't take money from special interests, but he's raised more special interest money than any governor in California history.

The alliance's work didn't end with the defeat of Schwarzenegger's ballot measures in last fall's election. It plans to keep the heat on until he's out of office.

The alliance is a coalition of organizations representing nearly 2.5 million educators, school employees, firefighters, nurses, police officers, health care workers and concerned citizens interested in improving the quality of life for all Californians. That includes ensuring that the state provides good schools, affordable health care, and safe communities.
