Noted author and lecturer Jonathan Kozol will be the guest speaker for the CTA Urban Issues Conference Feb. 24-26 in San Jose.
His newest book, The Shame of the Nation, pays tribute to educators who persist against the odds and directly challenges the practices being forced on urban systems by the Bush administration.
Kozol will deliver his keynote address on Sunday morning. Saturday's featured address will be delivered by CTA President Barbara E. Kerr.
The conference is designed for educators working in urban settings, especially at schools facing Program Improvement and other challenges under No Child Left Behind.
Pre-conference events on Friday include site visits to San Jose area schools.
Conference workshops focus on the challenges faced by Program Improvement schools and teachers, the impact of contract negotiations, and success stories from high-achieving Title I schools.
The conference will be held at the San Jose Marriott.
The registration fee of $85 includes the Friday reception, breakfast and lunch on Saturday, and breakfast on Sunday.
