CTA is conducting parallel fund drives this year to ensure that the spirit of two great men continues to reap benefits for children in the 21st century.
The Cesar Chavez Memorial Education Awards Program and the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Scholarship rely on the voluntary contributions of CTA members.
The fund drive's goal is 100 percent chapter participation, or $2 per member — $1 to each fund.
The Chavez program is entering its fifth year of recognizing teams of students and teachers who demonstrate an understanding of the vision and guiding principles by which Chavez lived his life. Prizes are awarded for written essays or visual arts created by teams from kindergarten through community college. Applications are available now.
The King scholarship fund was established in 1968 after Dr. King's assassination. It is designed to assist ethnic minority members of CTA and their dependent children to pursue teaching-related degrees or credentials leading to careers in public education. Ethnic minority members of Student CTA are also eligible to apply. Applications will be available in January.
Contributions can be sent to CTA Human Rights, P.O. Box 921, Burlingame, CA 94011. Donations are tax deductible.
