CTA Good Teaching Conferences offer chance to share what works

CTA's 54th annual Good Teaching Conferences, designed to support good teaching and learning practices for classroom teachers, will be held in Burlingame Jan. 21-23 and Hollywood March 11-13.

"READY! SET! TEACH! Powering Up for Tomorrow" is the theme.

The conferences include workshops in curriculum content areas, provide opportunities for professional development and offer time to network with colleagues. Many of the presenters will be classroom teachers sharing their expertise and knowledge with colleagues.

Among the workshop topics are "Developing Responsible Learners," "Keep Their Attention, Keep Them Learning," "Effective Classroom Management," "Stop the Confusion: Comprehension Tools and Strategies," and "15 Minutes a Week for a Successful Year."

Teachers can earn professional growth credits or college credits for advancement on the salary schedule for attending conference sessions.

Four pre-conference training sessions will be offered on both Fridays, Jan. 21 and March 11. The choices are:

  • "I Can Do It" classroom management training for new teachers;
  • "I Have Done It" classroom management training for veteran teachers;
  • "Strengthening the Bond" training for new K-12 general education teachers and special education teachers;
  • "ESEA/NCLB" training in complying with the new federal requirements in the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), also known as the No Child Left Behind Act.

Registration for a pre-conference session is $50, which covers a continental breakfast, lunch and session materials.

The conference begins officially with opening remarks and a reception Friday starting at 6:30 p.m., and continues with workshops all day Saturday and until noon Sunday. The registration fee includes hearty appetizers at the Friday reception, lunch on Saturday and brunch on Sunday.

Registration fees are $150 for members/fee payers and $450 for nonmembers who register in advance. On-site registration costs $175 for members/fee payers or $475 for nonmembers. The Student CTA registration fee is $30.
