Recycling program generates $75,000

Staples Regional Vice President Frank Gorski (right) and District Manager Tony Jewett (center) present the first in what they hope will be a series of donations to the CTA Institute for Teaching's Schools of Greatest Need campaign. Accepting are CTA officers Barbara E. Kerr, David A. Sanchez and Dean E. Vogel.

In the first three months of a printer cartridge recycling program, Staples Inc. has raised nearly $75,000 for the CTA Institute for Teaching's Schools of Greatest Need campaign.

The campaign's goal is to help improve conditions at schools that need extra assistance.

For each used inkjet and laser toner printer cartridge recycled by the public at one of the company's 160 California stores, Staples is donating $1 to the campaign.

The effort has been so successful, Staples is extending the time to recycle printer cartridges and benefit CTA's campaign through the end of the year.

In appreciation for the outstanding level of support Staples has shown for public education through its "Recycle for Education" program and for the example the chain has set in establishing workable partnerships with teachers, CTA officers presented Staples with a CTA State Gold Award for 2003.

Also winning State Gold Awards were the city of Santa Fe Springs in Los Angeles County for its extensive support of the Little Lake City School District; and the Hawthorne Rotary Club for its backing of local schools with numerous small grants that provide art and music classes, and allow students to go on field trips.

"These three awards are well deserved," said CTA President Barbara E. Kerr at a recent meeting of the association's Board of Directors. "Our State Gold Award is our highest honor for those people, organizations or companies who show they deserve statewide recognition for being true friends of public education."

If you want to help: You can make your school or office a drop-off location for the Recycle for Education program. Staples will deliver a free bin, which, when full, can be returned to the store for a big contribution to CTA's Schools of Greatest Need campaign.
