CTA President Barbara E. Kerr was named Woman of the Year in a presentation on the floor of the California Assembly March 15.
Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante designated Kerr as his honoree in the annual ceremony at the state Legislature, citing the strength of her lifelong commitment to public education, students and teachers.
At the ceremony, Bustamante said, "I have known Barbara since I served in the Assembly, and she represents all that it means to be a Woman of the Year. As a teacher and as an advocate, she has been a force of academic excellence for the children of California. It is my pleasure to honor her today for all of her distinguished accomplishments - past, present and future."
At the same ceremony, Montebello Teachers Association President Margie Granado was named Woman of the Year for Assembly District 58. A kindergarten/first-grade teacher at Montebello Park Elementary, she was recognized by Assembly Member Ron Calderon.
Kerr and Granado were among 81 women honored for their notable contributions to their communities.
"I never thought that I would be honored for doing what I love to do," said Kerr. "This is truly a surprise and an honor, and I thank Lieutenant Governor Bustamante for selecting me."
