King scholarships rely on member donations

March 15 is the deadline to apply for a Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Scholarship. Applications are available for downloading on the CTA website.

The scholarship program is supported entirely by voluntary contributions from CTA members and corporate donors. The number and amount of scholarships vary each year depending on the amount of contributions and on the financial need of individual applicants.

With the shortage of ethnic minority teachers and the demand for continuing professional growth, the fund's goal is to encourage ethnic minority students to become educators and to promote professional growth for ethnic minority teachers.

Eligible applicants must be pursuing a teaching-related career in public education and be a member of a defined ethnic minority group. Applicants must also be an active member of CTA; a dependent child of an active, retired-life or deceased CTA member; or a member of Student CTA.

In order to receive funds, scholarship recipients will be required to show proof of registration in an approved credential or degree program in an accredited institution of higher learning.

The annual fund drive started in January and runs through April. To contribute, send a check to the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 921, Burlingame, CA 94011.
