At the January meeting, CTA's State Council of Education:
- Applauded the election of Dana Dillon and Gary Lynes as the teachers' representatives on the STRS Board of Trustees. Carolyn Widener was elected to the seat for community college faculty.
- Elected Don Dawson (District 4), Charles L. Tubbs Jr. (District 5), Guy DeRosa (District 13) and Errol Campbell (Districts 6/14) to seats on NEA's Board of Directors.
- Established budget principles to guide CTA during the Legislature's deliberations over the 2004-05 budget.
- Approved the annual report for circulation.
- Approved the proposed preliminary report on redistricting the state for State Council representation.
- Reaffirmed support for striking grocery workers at Albertsons (Kroger), Ralphs, Vons (Safeway) and Pavilions (Safeway) grocery stores in Southern California; encouraged teachers not only to boycott those stores, but also to cut up their discount cards and send them back; and urged members to participate in a UTLA-sponsored rally/forum Jan. 31 for striking grocery workers. CTA is donating another $10,000 to the strike fund.
- Passed the "hat" and collected more than $4,000 for the South Bay United Teachers effort to recall one or more school board members in Redondo Beach.
