Good Teaching Conferences focus on sharing what works

CTA's 53rd annual Good Teaching Conferences will be held in Hollywood Jan. 30-Feb. 1 and Burlingame March 5-7.

Both conferences will feature CTA President Barbara E. Kerr as one of the keynote speakers and offer a variety of workshops on teaching techniques and learning activities that K-12 teachers can implement in the classroom. Many of the presenters will be classroom teachers sharing their expertise and knowledge with their colleagues.

Workshops will offer professional development opportunities, such as information on working with low-performing schools, supporting English language learners, pursuing National Board certification, and implementing state standards. Teachers can earn professional growth credits or college credits for advancement on the salary schedule for attending conference sessions.

Four pre-conference training sessions will be offered during the day on both Fridays, Jan. 30 and March 5:

  • "I Can Do It" classroom management training for new teachers;
  • "I Have Done It" classroom management training for veteran teachers;
  • "Strengthening the Bond" training for teachers working with special education students;
  • "ESEA, Part 2" training in complying with the new federal requirements in the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), also known as the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001.

Registration for a pre-conference session is $50, which covers a continental breakfast, lunch and a manual in addition to six hours of training.

The conference begins officially with a Friday reception and continues with workshops all day Saturday and Sunday morning. The registration fee includes hearty appetizers at the Friday reception, lunch on Saturday and brunch on Sunday.

Early registration fees are $125 for members/fee payers and $345 for non-members who register before Dec. 1 for the southern conference and before Jan. 3 for the northern conference.
