Vote for teacher reps to protect your retirement

In October, for the first time, members of the State Teachers' Retirement System (STRS) will elect representatives to the STRS Board. CTA fought for years to pass the law that allows teachers to have a say in who serves on the board, which sets policy for STRS.

CTA's endorsed candidates for teacher representatives on the STRS Board, Gary Lynes from Hillsborough and Dana Dillon from Weed, discuss retirement issues with Presidents Conference participant Mike Radoye from Sequoia (left).

Ballots will be mailed directly to eligible voters during the first part of October and must be postmarked or received by STRS on or before Dec.1. The STRS chief executive officer will announce the winners of the two K-12 positions on Dec.18.

CTA is recommending these candidates:

Gary Lynes, a member of the Hillsborough Teachers Association and longtime appointee to the STRS Board.

Dana Dillon, a member of the Weed Classroom Teachers Association who serves as the CTA liaison to the STRS Board. She is a former member of the NEA Board of Directors.

"Lynes has the knowledge and experience needed to ensure that the STRS system is properly structured and responds efficiently to members' needs," says CTA President Barbara E. Kerr. "Dana Dillon has the experience to know what teachers want in their retirement, including highest year compensation and lifetime health benefits. I know both of them will do an outstanding job."
