CTA's Washington named to State Board of Education

San Mateo County teacher Curtis Washington has been appointed to the State Board of Education.

Curtis Washington

A math and science teacher for the San Mateo Union High School District since 1988, he holds a bachelor of science degree in engineering from Princeton University and a master's in business administration from Stanford University.

"With the appointment of veteran Bay Area high school teacher Curtis Washington to the State Board of Education, the governor has moved a step closer to making the board more responsive to the needs of California's students, teachers and public schools," says CTA President Wayne Johnson. "This is a positive step and good news for California public schools.

"Washington brings the classroom experience and education credentials that the State Board really needs as it deals with implementing federal education requirements during a time of state budget cuts. As a well-respected teacher at Mills High School in Millbrae, Curtis will be a strong, positive voice in Sacramento for all students and teachers."

Washington serves as a delegate to CTA's State Council of Education and is a member of the steering committee of the CTA Golden Gate Service Center Council, which represents 4,600 teachers in San Mateo and San Francisco counties. In addition, he is a member of the National Science Teachers Association.
