A partnership of Pittsburg parents, citizens and community groups held the first of two education summits Jan. 18 to develop educational goals and objectives for students and schools in the Pittsburg Unified School District.
The Pittsburg Education Association was instrumental in organizing the community engagement project as a way to improve the conditions of teaching and learning.
The keynote speaker at the first summit was author and syndicated columnist Dr. Julianne Malveaux, shown here with CTA's Alcosta Service Center Council Chair Marc Sternberger (left). Also depicted are Pittsburg High School students Gilbert Fuentes and Jonathan Tan reporting out a subgroup's recommendations, and one of many breakout sessions in progress, this one led by CTA Human Rights Specialist Ward Rountree, who serves on the steering committee along with Sternberger, PEA President Chris Rohde and CTA Board member Pixie Hayward Schickele.
