Setting the stage

In Italy, child care programs focus on creating learning environments that are aesthetically appealing and, at the same time, capable of communicating what the children are learning and doing.

Creating Rooms of Wonder by Carol Seefeldt, Ph.D., is a book that provides teachers of students ages 2-8 with simple instructions and descriptive illustrations for arranging and displaying children's art and other schoolwork in a way that builds on that idea. Exhibiting children's work with thoughtfulness and care increases their feelings of self-worth and communicates to others what they are learning and how they are growing and developing.

The book explains how to use color, line, texture, composition, focal points and rhythm in designing the classroom environment. It also offers ideas for framing and mounting work, and setting up boxes and boards.

Published by Gryphon House, the book sells for $16.95. For more information, call (301) 595-9500.
