Teachers get seats on STRS Board

A newly enacted law will empower members of the State Teachers' Retirement System (STRS) by giving them the right to elect their representatives to the board that governs their pension funds.

SB 1580 by Senate President Pro Tempore John Burton allows teachers to elect three of the 12 members of the STRS board. The board oversees the investment of some $100 billion that funds the pensions of teachers and other certificated personnel.

Getting teachers the right to elect these representatives has been a long-standing CTA goal.
