...The committee has also reviewed a report on last summer's seminar on "Threat Assessment in Schools," sponsored by the U.S. Secret Service and the U.S. Department of Education. Key findings of their Safe Schools Initiative are available as an attachment to the full report, "A Guide to Managing Threatening Situations and to Creating Safe School Climates."

...The NEA Foundation for the Improvement of Education (NFIE) is offering two sets of grants for art specialists.

 

One allows elementary school art specialists to create and implement programs that promote learning among students at risk of failing. The deadline to apply is Feb. 3.

 

The other offers Arts@Work grants to encourage secondary school arts specialists to collaborate with technology-savvy educators and the business community to develop examples of technology-integrated arts curricula that meet high standards for student achievement. The program is supported in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. The deadline is March 3.

...Between April 1 and June 30, all California public employees, active and retired, CalPERS members or not - along with their spouses, parents, parents-in-law and siblings (ages 18 and over) - will be eligible to apply for long-term care coverage through CalPERS. The coverage pays for extended care at home or in an assisted living facility, adult day care center or a nursing home.

 

In addition to a broad array of benefit options in each of the three CalPERS Long-Term Care Plans, all new applicants issued coverage on or after April 1 will have five options in daily benefits for nursing home care. In addition, the maximum daily benefit for assisted living will increase to 70 percent of the daily benefit for nursing home care (up from 50 percent). ...CTA's Economic Benefits Trust has developed a "Guide to Long-Term Care" to help CTA members make informed decisions about buying long-term care insurance. It offers information on what CTA members should know about long-term care, its costs, and what type of benefits are offered by long-term care insurance.
